Artificial Intelligence (AI)
AI has the potential to do more than transform how existing work is done. The next generation of AI will enable entirely new products, services and solutions to complex real-world challenges, from advancing scientific discovery and precision manufacturing to improving agriculture, health, energy and environmental management.
For New Zealand, this is an opportunity to grow the economy by turning world-leading research into new export industries and generating highly skilled jobs.
In 2025, at the request of the Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology, MBIE launched a ‘call for proposals’ seeking bold, ambitious AI research ideas. In 2026, responsibility for the decision-making and investment process transitioned to NZIAT.
NZIAT is establishing an AI Growth Engine to connect world-leading research with the talent, capability, partnerships and investment needed to turn ideas into commercial opportunities and build an enduring competitive advantage for New Zealand.
