The New Zealand Institute for Advanced Technology (NZIAT) has marked a significant milestone with its first major investment in New Zealand's advanced technology future.
Through a seven-year investment of $71 million, NZIAT is supporting the Future Magnetic and Materials Technologies Platform, hosted by the Robinson Research Institute in Lower Hutt. The investment is designed to strengthen New Zealand's capability in advanced materials, superconductivity, cryogenic technologies, and high-value manufacturing.
As New Zealand's national institute for advanced technology, NZIAT was established to accelerate the commercialisation of research and help transform scientific excellence into economic growth, high-value exports, and skilled jobs. The Future Magnetic and Materials Technologies Platform demonstrates how NZIAT will work in practice, investing in areas of national strength and connecting researchers, industry, and investors to create real-world impact.
The platform will support research and innovation with applications across emerging industries, including advanced manufacturing, aerospace, energy technologies, and next-generation engineering. It will also help develop specialist skills and strengthen New Zealand's position in global technology markets.
This investment represents the first step in NZIAT's broader mission to build a connected national innovation ecosystem and ensure New Zealand is well positioned to compete and succeed in the technologies that will shape the future.
From frontier research to frontier firms, NZIAT is helping unlock the opportunities of advanced technology for New Zealand.
