As part of NZIAT's quantum technology discovery process, we convened a targeted stakeholder roundtable in Christchurch in May 2026 to explore where New Zealand can compete and create value within the global quantum technology landscape.
The discussion focused on identifying areas where New Zealand could accelerate to market or make selective, high-value plays. Stakeholders highlighted opportunities in areas such as sensing and control electronics, where New Zealand's existing capabilities could support participation in global quantum supply chains.
Participants also identified significant national strengths, including New Zealand's world-class research base across quantum technologies, photonics, materials science, and cryogenics. Potential future applications were highlighted in areas such as disaster resilience, agriculture, biological systems, and space.
The roundtable also identified key challenges, particularly the need to strengthen talent pipelines and supporting infrastructure. Stakeholders emphasised the importance of positioning quantum technology as the next major wave of technological innovation and taking a global view of how New Zealand can contribute to, and benefit from, emerging international markets.
The insights gathered are helping NZIAT build a clearer understanding of where New Zealand's strengths align with global opportunities and how a future Quantum Technology Growth Engine could support long-term economic impact.
